MAHI-MAHI (Coryphaena spp)

The common English name for this fish causes much confusion. The fish known as the “dolphin” is not related to the marine mammal of the same common name (family Delphinidae). Additionally, two species of dolphinfish exist, the common dolphinfish (Coryphaena hippurus) and the pompano dolphin (Coryphaena equiselis). Both these species are commonly marketed by their Pacific name, mahi-mahi.

‘Mahi-mahi’ or dolphinfish are very different from tuna, their flesh is white meat while tuna of course has a bit of red to it. The ‘Mahi-mahi’ has an elongate compressed body and a forked tail. Its long-based dorsal fin starts above or slightly behind the eyes. The species is usually metallic blue-green above and silver with a golden sheen on the sides. There is iridescent blue to black spots on the sides. The ‘Mahi-mahi’ and Pompano ‘Mahi-mahi’ can be separated by body depth (less than versus greater than 25% of standard length respectively). The tooth patch on the tongue is oval versus trapezoid. There are also differences in the number of dorsal fin rays, lateral line scales and vertebrae.

This fish contains a high amount of protein, vitamins and minerals. Each serving is around 134 calories (depending on how it’s prepared), with most of the calories coming from protein. The fish contains vitamin B-5 and B-6, which supports healthy cell function and controls metabolism.  Vitamins B-5 and B-6 are also beneficial to brain function and mood by helping to produce neurotransmitters and hormones. Selenium and potassium are both minerals found in this fish, which helps the body to fight disease and support the immune system.

Mahi has many benefits and is healthy for every part of your body. This fish is high in protein and low in calories, it is also jam packed with iron for building more healthy red blood cells. Mahi is also full of selenium which protects against harmful cells from entering the body and potassium for a healthy heart and disease prevention.
